Malcolm Herbert at Lampeter College (Univ. of Wales) is working on exactly this - he gave talks at the Pal Ass christmas meeting & the Progressive Palaeo Meeting in March [note for non-Pal Ass members, a UK students meeting]. He is from a computing/mathematics background but doing research on developing 3D reconstruction tehniques for palaeo problems.
