To: paleonet@nhm.ac.uk Geology X Paleobiology: A Critique During my work with fossil corals, I have seen that most of the students do not follow a biological view concerning their field of work. Since fossil coral taxonomy is historical related to biostratigraphy, most of them are just intersted in using fossil corals as another tool for correlation. That practice is the one that most contribute for the present confused status of fossil coral taxonomy. New names appears according to subjective views, just a few attention is done to make a precise study at the phena level, and the rules of the ICZN are usually neglected, since many species are being proposed using a typological view of the problem. That kind of problem is common all around in paleontology??? Are Geology and Paleobiology truly incongruent??? Just a comment... cheers, Alberto Correa de Vasconcellos Fax +55 (21) 265-2198 E-mail acvascon@ax.apc.org ___ * UniQWK v4.1 * The Windows Mail Reader
