SEPM Research Group on Quantitative Stratigraphy--Summary

Item Subject: Text_1
             SEPM Quantitative Stratigraphy Research Group
               3-5 PM, March 5, 1995, Doubletree Hotel
                         Houston, Texas

On March 5, 1995, the SEPM Research Committee approved the formation
of a Quantitative Stratigraphy Research Group as proposed by H. R.
Lane and R. W. Scott. Scott and Lane were following up on
recommendations derived from participants of the SEPM Research
Conference entitled `Graphic Correlation: The Method and its
Application' held in Houston in November and December of 1994. On its
approval of the new Research Group, the Committee requested that 1)
leadership be expanded beyond biostratigraphy to include other
geoscience disciplines, 2) efforts should be closely coordinated with
other SEPM research groups, such as those for Cyclostratigraphy and
Sequence Stratigraphy and, 3) that since there was an international
working group (IUGS) on Quantitative Stratigraphy, perhaps a
modification of the SEPM's research group name might be good to keep
the two efforts distinct in title, while maintaining and enhancing the
     cooperative relations that already exist.

With this charge, the first meeting of the Working Group was held
later in the day with an attendance of 17 geoscientists. Of these, 7
     were biostratigraphers, 8 sedimentologists/lithostratigraphers, and 2
mathematical geologists. Organizationally, there were 8 attendees
from industry, 1 from government, 6 from academia, and 2 consultants.
The group was pleased with the mix of specialties and organizations
present at the first meeting. These included:

Spirited discussion of the assembled group revolved around several
     topics. These included:

     1. The need to focus on techniques and tools.
     2. The need to develop a short course on quantitative techniques
     3. The need to develop a laboratory manual.
     4. The need to assemble case studies.
     5. The need to develop globally accessible databases.

Interest focused mainly on developing 1) a course on quantitative
stratigraphy, 2) a lab manual and 3) a symposium at a future SEPM
meeting. It was decided that exercises for a course or lab manual
could be developed around, a) Graphic Correlation, b) Composite
     Standard, c) RASCing, d) No-Space Graphing, e) Spectral Analysis,
f)Fischer Plots of Parasequence Stacking Patterns, g) Markov Chains,
     h)Binary Matching Coefficients, i) Variograms/Geostatistics,
     j)Multivariate Methods, k) Geohistory Analysis.

The following list of things to do and responsibilities was agreed to
     by the attendees.

     1. Establish a membership (Lane, Scott, Fouke, Harris)
                    a) announcement in the SEPM Newsletter
                    b) announcement in International Q. S. Newsletter

     2. Propose two 1/2 day technical sessions for the 1997 Dallas
AAPG/SEPM Annual Meeting as follows; proposal has been submitted to
     technical committee:
                     a) Quantitative Stratigraphic Techniques applied to
                         Reservoir Characterization.(Lane, Hohn)
                      b) Quantitative Stratigraphic Techniques applied to
                         Sequence Stratigraphy. (Scott, Bhattacharya)

     3. In one year:
           a) A plan for a teaching manual (PM, MH, PS)
           b) Present Manual as a short course at 1997 Dallas AAPG/SEPM
               Meeting.

      4. Long-range Planning

The leadership of the Working Group was expanded to include Mark
Harris, University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee and Bruce Fouke,Vrije
Universiteit, Amsterdam. The group decided to delay a change in the
name of the group until the next meeting.

     For the Research Group,

     H. R. Lane
     R. W. Scott
     M. F. Harris
     B. W. Fouke
