New FTP Site Deposit

The following Mac word processing utility described below has been placed
in the following directory in the PaleoNet FTP Site:

PaleoNet/Application_Exchange/Macintoah_PD/Word_Processing

under the name:

Importing_BAonCD.cpt

A description of this utility follows this message.

Anyone wishing to contribute to the Mac FTP Site should drop me a note to
make sure there is room and than then either upload the file directly or
send it to me for deposit. Also, if anyone would like to see a particular
file/application/utility available in the PaleoNet FTP site they should
drop me a line about it or, better yet, post a request to PaleoNet.

----------

Dear Dr MacLeod,

I needed to import some information from BioAbstracts (Biological
Abstracts on CD) in my EndNote (Mac) database, and I had to make up
a number of settings files to handle that. They might be useful for
other palaeontologists as well, so I thought of uploading them to the
paleonet site -- but I didn't know how.

Please find attached the cpt'ed and hqx'ed archive containing those
files. I also include the explanatory Read Me file.

Regards, Florin

IMPORTING BA-ON-CD RECORDS ON YOUR MAC
======================================

11/14/94

This archive contains several files meant to facilitate the
importation
of BA-on-CD records in your favourite Mac bibliographic database.

WHAT IS BA-ON-CD?
-----------------

Biological Abstracts on CD (BA-on-CD) is the CD-ROM equivalent of
Biological Abstracts, a database of biological and biomedical research
literature produced by BIOSIS. Palaeontology is peripheric to
BA-on-CDUs focus, but a large number of papers of interest to
palaeontologists are referenced therein.

DOWNLOADING AND IMPORTING: THE TECHNICAL NICETIES
-------------------------------------------------

BA-on-CD uses SilverPlatter software, available either in PC or in
Macintosh version. Each reference includes author name(s), year,
title,
translated title, journal, an English abstract, keywords, and other
information. The procedures for searching, browsing, printing, and
downloading are fairly simple and similar to the equivalent procedures
in GEOREF.

Downloading references and importing them in bibliographic databases
such as ProCite, EndNote, or PaperBase is much easier than in GEOREF,
because BA-on-CD uses a common, consistent format throughout.

If you are using newer versions of these applications (e.g.
EndNote+EndLink 2.0), importing BA-on-CD records is relatively
painless; but if you use older versions, or if you manage your
references with a generic DBMS (e.g. FileMaker 2.0) things are a bit
more complicated, and the files in this archive may help.

DOWNLOADING AND IMPORTING: THE LEGAL NICETIES
---------------------------------------------

The legal niceties of downloading and using on oneUs own personal
computer references from CD-ROM databases, such as BA-on-CD, are at
present rather blurry. The current policy of BIOSIS (as of August
1994)
is to allow free temporary storage of downloaded references, and to
request a fee of $0.39 per record (with a minimum fee of US$195) for
permanent storage. As defined by BIOSIS, temporary storage means the
downloaded records are going to be stored for less than one month on a
medium different from the CD-ROM they came on, anything longer than
one
month being considered permanent storage.
